The Hipster's Guide to Pour Over Coffee

By: Ken Takakura     Revised by: Mark Cambell    Last Updated: Feb 8, 2024

Pour-over coffee makers have become increasingly popular in recent years, offering a simple, hands-on brewing process that produces a flavorful, artisanal cup of coffee. Newer pour over coffee makers are utilizing innovative designs and high-quality, craft materials to provide an even better brewing experience for coffee lovers.

As pour-over coffee makers have evolved, there are now many excellent options available. However, a few stand out as the cream of the crop for 2023 based on features, build quality, and user reviews.

First up, the Chemex Classic which is made from thick, durable Borosilicate glass. It is exceptionally durable and helps retain heat to evenly extract coffee compounds. The Chemex Classic is elegant, simple to use, and produces a full-bodied cup of pour over coffee, perfect for any taste. It does require manually heating and controlling the water temperature, however. This hourglass-shaped beaker was invented in 1941 and still looks like it belongs in a museum. But behind its hipster aesthetic lies a high-tech secret: it has extra thick paper filters that make the coffee so pure you can taste individual notes of flavor, from berry undertones to a slight nuttiness. The only downside is it takes at least 5 minutes to make a cup, but who's in a hurry when there's Instagramming to do?

If waiting's not your thing, try a Hario V60 coffee maker. This weird looking cone-shaped doodad will get you hopped up on coffee in under 2 minutes. Made from high-quality paper materials that are naturally acid-resistant, the V60 is environmentally friendly, economical and provides great flexibility with different types of filters. The paper filters are very affordable and the V60 coffee maker works great with metal mesh filters as well for darker roasts. It also has a smaller footprint than the Chemex, making it ideal for tight spaces or single-cup brewing. The V60 coffee maker is beloved by hip baristas for allowing maximum flavor extraction with minimum effort. Just don't ask how the paper filters turn your coarse grinds into a smooth brew - some mysteries are meant to remain unsolved.

Last but certainly not least obscuro, we have the Kalita Wave. This flat-bottomed beauty was invented in Japan in the 1950s but has only recently graced our shores. The Wave's special wavy filters make an especially crisp and clean cup of pour over coffee, that would satisfy even the most discerning coffee critics from Oslo to Oakland. Sure, replacements filters have to be imported from Japan, but think of the stories you'll have to tell!

While pour over coffee makers may require patience and an unreasonable obsession with filters, they reward us with an unparalleled brew that elevates coffee to an art form. The pour over coffee may be done in 3 minutes, but the memories will last forever or at least until the next rare bean drops. The pour over: because simple coffee is for simpletons!

Brewing Perfect Pour Over Coffee in 10 Easy Steps

By: Ken Takakura     Revised by: Mark Cambell    Last Updated: Jan 8, 2024

Pour over coffee makers allow you to brew individual cups of coffee with precision and control. Follow these 10 simple steps to make the perfect cup every time:

1. Gather your supplies. You'll need a gooseneck kettle, coffee grounds, filters, a scale, and of course your pour over coffee maker.

2. Grind the right amount of coffee beans. A medium-fine grind works best. Aim for around 60 grams of coffee grounds for every liter of water.

3. Wet the filter. Place a circular paper filter in the pour over cone and rinse lightly with hot water. This will help the grounds settle evenly.

4. Add the coffee grounds. Pour the precisely measured grounds into the wet filter and distribute them evenly around the sides. Avoid piles that could cause uneven extraction.

5. Preheat the water. Boil fresh water and let it cool to around 200°F for optimal brewing temperature.

6. Bloom the grounds.  Pour 40-60 grams of the hot water over the grounds and gently stir or swirl for 30-60 seconds. This "wakes up" the coffee.

7. Brew the coffee. In a slow, continuous spiral motion, pour the remaining hot water over the grounds, letting it drain between pours.

8. Allow to steep. Let the brewed coffee steep for 2 to 4 minutes to fully extract flavor from the grounds.

9. Remove the cone. Carefully lift the brewing cone away and pour the coffee into your vessel.

10. Enjoy! Take in the aroma, listen to the final drips, and sip your perfectly brewed pour over coffee.

With a little practice, these simple steps will help you brew flavorful pour over coffee at home every time. Let me know if you have any other questions!
