Simple Perfection
Why the Bodum Brazil French Press Spoiled Me Forever
By: James Butler Revised by: Mark Cambell Last updated: Jan 29, 2024
And now the Bodum Brazil French press had arrived on my doorstep to preview, two weeks after I'd already fallen head over heels for the simple elegance of my Chambord French press, but the siren song of a slightly larger capacity and solid wooden handle beckoned me to give this new beauty a chance.
Wasting no time, I filled the 34 ounce borosilicate glass carafe with boiling water and eagerly measured out my usual amount of freshly ground coffee. As I slowly plunged the double steel filter down the tall cylinder, a sense of deja brew came over me. The built-in catch cup neatly caught the grounds, the airtight seal trapped the flavors, and the proportions just felt right.
But as I lifted the carafe and took that first restorative sip, I realized this French press wasn't just similar...it had the potential to be so much more. The proportions and fit of the double filter plunger allowed for just the perfect amount of finesse and control over the steeping process. And that beautiful solid wooden handle felt like it had always belonged in my hand.
In short order, this no-frills "Brazil" French press stole my heart. It reminded me that simple elegance comes not just from excess but from distilling something down to its perfect form for the task at hand. Namely, brewing the best damn cup of coffee I've ever tasted.
So, I may be smitten with the Brazil French press for now, but I suspect our relationship will last for years through many delicious cups together. Simple design complemented by quality materials and craftsmanship have won my affections once again. As for the Chambord press, I expect it will always have a prized place on my shelf (and even fill in from time to time), but the Bodum Brazil has set the new gold standard in my kitchen.
Pros:
Large 34 oz capacity
Solid wooden handle
Perfectly engineered double filter and plunger
Cons:
None yet, but we'll see if this love affair endures the test of time!
