Best Coffee Grinders  to Choose From

By: Alicia Walters   Revised by: Mark Cambell   Last updated:Mar 14, 2025

When preparing your perfect espresso, your coffee bean grinder is one of the most important appliances. There are several different types of coffee grinders, and each is suited for a specific brewing method. When deciding which coffee grinder is suited for you, consider how you typically brew your coffee.

The most common are burr grinders and blade grinders. Burr coffee grinders use rotation conical or flat burrs to grind the beans. They create a consistent even grind size appropriate for most brewing methods. Burr grinders come in manual or automatic form. Burr grinders can offer more precision and are typically utilized for brewing methods of an exact grind size like espresso or Turkish coffee. Blade grinders use rotating blades to chop the beans into broken pieces. French press or cold brew coffee, and coarse grind are best prepared with blade grinders. They are cheaper but produce more inconsistent results. In a drip coffee or standard 4-cup French press grind size, aim for a medium grind.

Medium-fine to fine grind is ideal for pour-over, Turkish, or espresso brewing. Extremely coarse grind is needed for cold brew coffee in larger batch. A finer, more even grind will leave more surface area of the beans exposed for faster extraction and a coarser, irregular grind will allow water to pass through with ease for slow extraction. Several of the best burr coffee bean grinders include grind settings and timers for even more control or grinding by weight using an in-built hopper and scale for repeatable accurate results. These are the best coffee bean grinders. Electric conical burr grinders will typically have the most grind setting options ranging from coarse to fine. So before choosing your coffee bean grinder remember: the type of grinder, burr or blade, manual or automatic, will significantly impact the quality and consistency of your cup of coffee.

Buying the right grinder for your brewing needs will help you to get the best flavor and, in turn, make you the barista you've always aspired to be.

Make sure you pay attention to grind accuracy, size and settings and ease of use based on how and what you like to make.
